pH Glossary

• pH is an abbreviation for potential Hydrogen. The pH of any substance is the measure of its Hydrogen-ion concentration.

• The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline. Neutral substances have a pH of 7.

• All cells that make up the human body are slightly alkaline and must maintain this pH in order to function.

• The kidneys and brain control only blood acid/alkaline pH. Diet is the primary means of managing overall body acid/alkaline pH.

• The lungs, skin, liver and kidneys are primarily tasked with managing and removing acid from the body.

• For optimum health, the human body must maintain a pH of within the range of approximately 7.2 to 7.6.

• The acid-alkaline balance of the blood is critical and managed separately from body pH. If too much acid is present, it can cause oxygen debt, which can eventually lead to death.

• The ideal ratio of a normal body is 75 – 80% alkaline and 20 – 25% acidic.

• Yeast, fungus, bacteria mold and certain viruses cannot survive in an alkaline base, only an acidic base.

• Acidosis is a condition that results when the body remains in an acidic pH state for an extended time. It is thought that many Americans suffer from low-grade acidosis.

• Many leading biochemists and medical physiologists recognize pH (or the acid-alkaline balance) as the most important aspect of a balanced and healthy body.

• Healthy overall body pH is critical for body functions, resulting in more energy, less illness, healthy sleep, sound bones and teeth, longer health span as we age, better circulation, and healthy weight with less fat.
